Asda Kwik Cricket Festival 2009 - Friday 26th June 2009

Trowbridge Cricket Club was the host for the Wiltshire ASDA Kwik Cricket Finals on Friday 26th June. Following the district competitions that took place in early June 20 mixed teams and 10 girls teams were represented at the county finals.

Despite heavy rain in the morning the clouds cleared and play was able to begin on time. Throughout the day there was some excellent cricket played from all teams and as the group stages of the girls festival reached their conclusion there were some very tight results that dictated who went through to the final. In the end Saint Edmunds School of Calne progressed through to the final to meet Kings Lodge School of Chippenham. However, Saint Edmunds’ progress was only assured as a result of their one victory over Broadchalke who finished a close second in their group.

The Girls final was tightly contested, full of clever bowling and some excellent batting. Kings Lodge, batting first managed to score 223. In reply Saint Edmunds came out in an attacking mood as they set about chasing Kings Lodge’s total. This attacking mentality paid dividends as they closed on a score of 244. This meant that Saint Edmunds finished as the county winners for 2009 and they wish them luck as they compete in the regional finals on Friday.

In the mixed festival the schools were split into four groups with the four winners progressing through to semi finals. These schools were Ruskin (Swindon), Derry Hill, St Mark’s (Salisbury) and St Peter’s (Marlborough). In two very competitive and tense finals Ruskin beat Derry Hill by 2 runs and St Mark’s beat St Peter’s to go through to the county final.

The final was played in fantastic spirit with some excellent spin bowling and powerful batting begin displayed by both sides. In the end Ruskin ran out winners by 48 runs thanks in the main to the large number of boundaries that they hit in their innings. Ruskin go on to represent Wiltshire at the county finals on Monday 29th June.

Overall, the day was a fantastic spectacle for Cricket with approximately 300 children in attendance. Richard Logan, an ex professional cricketer with Hampshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire was there to present the trophies.
