Cornwall started well and had reached 130 for 3 wickets when a stand of 106 between David Roberts (102, the fifth centurion of the match) and Tom Sharp (55 in 34 balls) left Cornwall needing 115 in 13 overs to win. Wiltshire v Buckinghamshire - 23rd May 2010
Wiltshire finished their group matches in the MCCA Trophy with a win against Buckinghamshire at High Wycombe on Sunday by 2 wickets. Winning the toss, Wiltshire asked Buckinghamshire to bat. They made a steady start on a wicket which looked full of runs and at the end of their 50 overs had totalled 273 for 6 wickets. Ricky Hopwood scored 51 and Bobby Sher 67 not out. For Wiltshire Owen Alsop took 2 for 44 and there was 1 wicket each for Simon Branston, Mitchell Stokes, James Hayward and Michael Coles.
Wiltshire were looking to score quickly so as to improve their run rate but in order to overtake Devon’s run rate and to be certain of making the quarter finals it was thought that they needed to score the runs in about 32 overs (a nearly impossible task). Openers Mitchell Stokes (38) and Jon Chandler (35) attacked the bowling and put on 85 in the first 10 overs. Both were out almost together and when James Hayward was also out Wiltshire had slumped to 95 for 3. Henry Langford (47) and Michael Coles (34) set about repairing the situation but both were out by the time the score had reached 175. Tom Bowler batting at number 7 in only his 3rd senior county match then played an innings of great maturity as he marshalled the remaining batsmen to see Wiltshire home in the 45th over to win by 2 wickets. He finished on 65 not out as Wiltshire totalled 274 for 8 wickets.
News then came through from St Austell that Cornwall and Wales had tied meaning that Devon and Wiltshire both with 6 points were in the 2 top places in the group with Cornwall (who had the best run rate) on 5 points. It is thought that Devon with the superior run rate had topped the group leaving Wiltshire with an away quarter-final against Dorset at Dean Park, Bournemouth on June 13th.
Before this match takes place, Wiltshire start their 3 day Championship programme against Shropshire at South Wilts Cricket Club, Salisbury on June 6/7/8th staring at 11.00am on each day.
Wiltshire v Devon - 16 May 2010
Wiltshire’s unbeaten run in the MCCA Trophy group matches came to an end when they lost to Devon at Trowbridge on Sunday by 5 wickets. In a match reduced to 45 overs a side because of rain, Devon won the toss and asked Wiltshire to bat in conditions which were likely to make run scoring difficult. Wiltshire were soon in trouble losing their first 3 wickets for 16 runs before Henry Langford (32) and Steve Bullen (25) put on 49 for the 4th wicket. Further wickets fell before James Hibberd (17) and Alex Senneck (29 not out) put on 32 for the 8th wicket. The Wiltshire innings closed at 135 for 8 wickets. For Devon, Bobby Dawson took 3 for 8, Ian Bishop 2 for 18 and Scott Barlow 2 for 31.
Devon’s innings started in a similar way to Wiltshire’s as they lost their first 4 wickets for 20 runs to the opening bowlers Alex Senneck (9 overs 1 for 9) and Richard Bedbrook (3 for 25) before David Lye (47 not out) and Josh Bess (25) put on 51 for the 5th wicket and when Bess was out Sandy Allen (25 not out) joined Lye to see Devon home by 5 wickets with more than 3 overs to spare.
Wiltshire’s final group match is against Buckinghamshire at High Wycombe next Sunday, May 23rd. In order to qualify as group winner or runner-up for the quarter finals, Wiltshire will have to beat Buckinghamshire and Cornwall fail to beat Wales or will have to win the match by a margin sufficient to raise their net run rate above that of either Devon or Cornwall and both of these counties have a far higher net run rate at present. Alex Senneck is unavailable for this match and his place will be taken by Ryan Watkins who has missed the last 2 matches.
Wiltshire v Wales - 2 May 2010
Wiltshire gained a remarkable 1 wicket win over Wales Minor Counties in their latest MCCA Trophy group match at Pontarddulais on Sunday with starring roles for three young players, all products of the County’s Youth Development programme. With James Hibberd already unavailable, Wiltshire lost 3 players on the day before the match, with Eddie Abel being ill and both Alex Senneck and Ryan Watkins being injured. Into the side came Nick Harrison (aged 18) and Tom Bowler (aged 20) who was making his senior county debut joining Owen Alsop (aged 17) who played in the previous match.
Wales won the toss and chose to bat in cold conditions with a strong wind blowing down the ground and by the 40th over had reached 150 for 4 wickets. Nick Harrison had taken the first 2 wickets in consecutive balls. Wales attempted to increase the run rate but were all out on the last ball of the 50th over for 214. Nick Harrison who had taken a third wicket proceeded to take another 3 in the final over to finish with impressive figures of 10 overs 6 for 30. Tom Bowler took 2 for 39 with his leg spin. For Wales Daniel Roberts top scored with 68.
Wiltshire felt confident with a score of 214 at just over 4 runs per over required but proceeded to lose wickets at regular intervals with both seamers and spinners causing them problems. When Richard Bedbrook was out in the 32nd over the score was 114 for 8 wickets. At this point Owen Alsop was joined by Tom Bowler and with sensible batting they put together a partnership of 87 for the 9th wicket in 14 overs. When Bowler was out for 34, 14 runs were still needed and Alsop was joined by Nick Harrison. Alsop now took control and with 10 runs scored in the 47th over, the scores were level and Alsop proceeded to hit a boundary off the 2nd ball of the 48th over to take the score to 218 for 9 wickets to give Wiltshire a win which had seemed unlikely an hour earlier. Owen Alsop finished on 69 not out.
Wiltshire’s next match in the competition is against Devon at Trowbridge on Sunday May 16th starting at 11.00am.
Wiltshire v Cornwall - 25 April 2010
Wiltshire started their group matches in the MCCA Trophy with a narrow 6 run victory under the Duckworth Lewis method against Cornwall at Devizes on Sunday. Cornwall won the toss and asked Wiltshire to bat under overcast conditions. Wiltshire lost Jon Chandler in the first over but this was followed by a stand of 105 between Mitchell Stokes (52) and James Hayward (45). Ryan Watkins also scored 45 and with Michael Coles scoring 31 and James Hibberd 43, Wiltshire were all out in the 50th over for 276. For Cornwall Justin Stephens took 3 for 48.
Cornwall’s reply was delayed after rain in the interval and they had reached 67 for 1 wicket in the 9th over when there was a further delay through rain and after the loss of 9 overs the revised target under the Duckworth Lewis method was 248 in 41 overs. Cornwall had reached 210 after 35 overs mainly thanks to a 5th wicket stand of 95 between David Roberts who made a splendid century and was finally out for 113 in 105 balls and Chris Hunkin who made 44. When this partnership was broken Wiltshire quickly got on top and when the final over started Cornwall needed 9 with the last pair at the wicket which they did not achieve as Wiltshire won by 6 runs. Cornwall finished at 242 for 9 wickets. Ryan Watkins took 3 for 39 and James Hibberd 2 for 29.
Wiltshire’s next match in the competition is against Wales Minor Counties at Pontaddulais next Sunday, May 2nd, with one change in the team with Ben Walker replacing Jon Chandler.

Wiltshire v Berkshire - 18 April 2010
Berkshire regained the Marlborough Cup at Devizes on Sunday when they comprehensively beat Wiltshire by 8 wickets. Wiltshire won the toss in ideal batting conditions, but made a slow start losing both openers early. James Hayward (41) and Owen Alsop (35) steadied the ship and it was left to James Hibberd (52 not out in 46 balls) and Richard Bedbrook (20) to take the score to 217 for 7 wickets in their 50 overs which it was hoped would be a competitive total. Berkshire however had other ideas and after losing their first wicket to Alex Senneck with the score at 4, a partnership between David Barnes (75) and Jono McLean (138 not out) of 197 took them to the brink of victory and they reached 223 for 2 wickets with 18 overs remaining.
