Match report:

The last match of the season for the Wiltshire U10s promised to be a tough fixture against an Oxfordshire side with a good record and a strong top order batting line up.  Wiltshire lost the toss and were put in.  Miles Kantolinna got a good ball in just the 2nd over and was bowled for 2.  Tom Stagg and Will Thomas needed to see off the new ball and both batted comfortably for 10 overs, posting a stand of 43 before Thomas flashed at a wide one and was adjudged to have a got a thin edge to the keeper for 16.  Unfortunately, Wiltshire then quickly lost Al Mackenzie and Arran Aujla, both for nought, leaving them 57 for 4 at the first drinks break off 15 overs.  Instructions for the next session were for the batsmen to re-build the innings and set a platform for the final 10 overs.  Although opener Tom Stagg was finally removed in the 20th over for a very good 22, Luke Curtis and Dan Call really steadied the ship and after 30 overs had taken the score to 98 for 5.  Call had played a great supporting role for Curtis during this spell but after the second drinks break both batsmen looked to pick up the scoring.  Curtis in particular started to dominate the bowling before he was finally bowled in the last over for a superb 71, trying to score quick runs at the end of the innings.  The partnership between Call and Curtis produced 97 runs off 20 overs and Call finished up unbeaten on 23.  68 runs were scored off the last 10 overs resulting in a good score of 166 for 7 with Josh Weaver run out for 1 off the last ball of the innings.

Having bowled and fielded well throughout the Summer, Wiltshire felt they had posted a defendable score and they were quickly encouraged when Ben Richards bowled the opener (Miller) in the second over of Oxfordshire’s reply.  Unfortunately despite this early success, all of the Wiltshire bowlers struggled to find the accuracy that had served them well in previous games and they lacked their usual sharpness in the field.  Extras mounted up quickly and without having to play too many shots, Oxfordshire eased to 66 for 1 after 15 overs.  Opener Price and No. 3 Ward were starting to look well set.  Thomas, Stagg and Curtis bowled much better for Wiltshire after the first drinks break with the run rate reduced to around 3 an over in the second 15 over session.  But they couldn’t get the breakthrough and the two Oxfordshire batsmen played really well, taking the score to 115 for 1 after 30 overs.  Needing 52 off the last 10 overs, the game was still in the balance but with wickets in hand, Price and Ward played with increasing authority and confidence.  They took Oxfordshire to 160 and within touching distance of the win before Stagg had Ward trapped LBW for 41 in the 36th over.  Wakeford then caught and bowled the new batsman off the first ball of the next over to ensure an exciting finish but Price saw Oxfordshire home in the 39th over, having batted through the innings for a fantastic 75 not out.

Although Wiltshire had not been at their best in the field they battled right to the end and the final flourish was a credit to their staying power and team spirit in their first 40 over game.

Oxfordshire won by 7 wickets

Match report:

Wiltshire lost the toss, were put in by Gwent on a pitch which had something in it for the bowlers and were fairly quickly in some trouble at 35 for 4 in the 9th over.  With the pressure on the batting side, Arran Aujla (No. 5) and Luke Curtis (No. 6) needed to dig in and try to re-build the Wiltshire innings.  Both batted brilliantly – sharing a critical stand of 65.  Aujla defiantly protected his wicket, with some really nice shots, especially off the back foot and played the perfect supporting role for Curtis, scoring 9 runs whilst occupying the crease for 18 overs.  Curtis grew in confidence throughout his innings, playing powerfully to all parts of the ground.  His 50 came up via a stunning straight drive and he went on to score 68 at nearly a run a ball, increasingly looking to pick up the scoring rate as Wiltshire approached the final few overs.  Tom Stagg and Josh Weaver contributed to the entertainment at the end with 36 runs coming off the last 5 overs.  Having set themselves a target score of 150, Wiltshire ended up on 152 for 6 – the Coach was delighted!

Wiltshire immediately looked enthusiastic and well organised in the field, with lots of encouragement for the opening bowlers who both responded with a fantastic spell of swing bowling.  Tom Stagg and Josh Weaver bowled great lines, making it difficult to score and with Stagg’s in-swing and Weaver’s away-swing, they always looked likely to take early wickets.  In the 3rd over Staggy got the first deserved breakthrough with captain Will Thomas taking a simple catch.  Weaver’s swing then resulted in Gwent’s dangerous No. 3 being bowled around his legs.  After 8 overs from the opening pair, Gwent were already in trouble at 17 for 4, two wickets each for the openers who both finished with figures of 2 for 7 off their 4 overs.  Jon Woods and Lewis Wakeford continued to apply pressure conceding only 12 and 10 runs respectively off their 4 overs but Gwent were building a defiant 5th wicket partnership.  At 42 for 4 after 16 overs, spin was introduced from both ends with leg spinner Alex Duffell and off spinner Jack Smith.  Both continued to give nothing away, Duffell conceding only 9 runs off 5 overs.  Smith’s 2nd over was excellent, taking 2 wickets in successive balls and finally removing the Gwent No. 2 for 15, caught behind by Kantolinna.  Despite all the fielders crowding the batsmen for the hat-trick ball, Gwent managed to survive it.  Smith finished with 2 for 11.  At 62 for 6 after 25 overs, Wiltshire had the luxury of being able to turn to the faster bowling of Will Thomas and Luke Curtis to try to finish off the innings.  Curtis was immediately too quick for Gwent’s No. 8, bowling him with his first ball and with a run out in the same over the score was 74 for 8.  Thomas finished off the game with 2 wickets in 2 overs - one caught and bowled – to finish with figures of 2 for 7.  Gwent were all out for 83 in the 30th over.

Everyone in the team contributed to this result.  An outstanding 65 from Curtis gave Wiltshire a competitive total and then all the bowlers were excellent, supported by another very good fielding performance.

Wiltshire (152 for 6) won by 69 runs.

Man of the Match: Luke Curtis

Wiltshire Under 10 v Dorset Under 10

Sunday 6th June 2010 at Redlynch & Hale CC (35 overs)

Wiltshire XI:

Tom Stagg Daniel Call
Miles Kantolinna (wk) Lewis Wakeford
Will Thomas (c) Alex Duffell
Rhys Davies Jack Smith
Luke Curtis (vc) Ben Richards
Al McKenzie Jonathan Woods (fielding 12th man)

Match report:

The ground at Redlynch & Hale was really well prepared for an U10 County match and Wiltshire elected to put Dorset in to bat first on a wicket with good pace and bounce.  After a slightly nervous first couple of overs, Wiltshire’s opening bowlers, Ben Richards and Tom Stagg found their rhythm and in the 3rdover of the match Richards took the first wicket - making lots of ground and diving forward to take a catch off his own bowling.  Tom Stagg quickly followed up with a straight ball that removed Dorset’s number 3, LBW for 1.  In the 7th over Luke Curtis replaced Richards and Wiltshire took a key wicket as the dangerous looking opening bat, Mallinson, went for a quick single with a push to midwicket where Al McKenzie ran him out for 17 with a quick pick up and direct hit at the non-strikers end – 23 for 3.  Alex Duffell replaced Stagg for the 8th over as Wiltshire looked to the leg spinner to keep up the pressure but Dorset batted positively up to the first drinks break and moved to 59 for 3 after 12 overs.  Having been encouraged to concentrate on their line and length, Wiltshire responded immediately after the break as Curtis bowled Barber (No. 5) for 24 with a quick, full length delivery and he finished his spell of 4 overs with 1 for 13.  Will Thomas, after one expensive over before the break, bowled 3 tight overs and was unlucky not to be rewarded with a wicket.  Curtis was replaced by Jon Woods who also bowled a nagging line and length – he picked up an LBW in his first over, and then beat Sands (No. 4) who was very smartly stumped by Kantolinna for 21 before hitting the stumps again to take his 3rd wicket (3 for 15 off 4 overs – a great spell).  At the other end, Lewis Wakeford had replaced Thomas and he also took a wicket in his first over.  Curtis, Thomas, Woods and Wakeford had combined to produce an excellent spell of bowling after the first drinks break, taking 5 wickets for only 25 runs in just under 9 overs – and reducing Dorset to 84 for 8.  Lewis Wakeford finished a really tight spell of away swing bowling with 1 for 6 off 4 overs.  After 2 overs of off spin from Jack Smith, the opening bowlers returned but initially encountered some positive batting, especially from Currie for Dorset, until Tom Stagg found his line and length again.  He picked up the last 2 wickets with Currie finally out LBW for 21 before a solid catch from Dan Call (who had replaced Kantolinna behind the stumps) removed the last batsman off the first ball of the 31st over. Stagg finished with 3 for 24 and Dorset were 126 all out.  The boys had been set a target to reduce the extras to half of the total in the last match – which they achieved exactly!

With a quick outfield rewarding good shots, Wiltshire were hopeful that their excellent bowling and fielding performance gave them a good chance of winning the game. But after a positive start from Tom Stagg, cutting the first ball of the innings away for 2 runs, he was bowled by the 4th ball.  Will Thomas joined Miles Kantolinna at the crease and they looked to set a platform.  After a patient start, both began to play more shots and they safely reached the first drinks break at 12 overs on 60 for 1.  They resumed in the same manner and continued to put away the bad balls.  By the second drinks break at 24 overs they were still there and Kantolinna had moved to 47 not out with the score 115.  In the 25th over a well struck boundary brought up Kantolinna’s half century and in the next over a couple of quick singles took the pair to the winning score for the loss of just one wicket!   A fantastic unbeaten partnership of 123 with Miles Kantolinna finishing on 55 not out and Will Thomas 34 not out.

Wiltshire (127 for 1) won by 9 wickets.

Match report:

Wiltshire’s first match of the season was a tough fixture away to Hampshire.

Captain, Will Thomas, won the toss and put Hampshire in to bat first.  Opening bowlers, Luke Curtis and Ben Richards, quickly found their line and length, conceding only 16 runs off the first 6 overs.  Tom Stagg and Will Thomas followed with an equally tight 6 over spell conceding only 13 runs.  All of the bowlers created chances but were unlucky and Hampshire were 29 for no wicket after 12 overs.  The Hampshire openers then started to build on their solid start and picked up the run rate, taking the score up to 75 after 20 overs, despite a tight spell of 3 overs for 8 runs from Josh Weaver.  Alex Duffell, Wiltshire’s leg spinner, had come in to the attack in the 19th over and in his second over he found his rhythm and dismissed both openers, taking a sharp caught and bowled chance for his first wicket and then picking up his second with a skied leading edge which was well held by Josh Weaver at mid-on.  Duffell continued to bowl really well and, supported at the other end by Dan Call and Jon Woods, ended with excellent figures of 4 for 21.  Luke Curtis came back and picked up a wicket with his first ball, caught very smartly behind by Miles Kantolinna.  Tom Stagg then closed out the Hampshire innings with a great spell of tight bowling, taking 2 for 7 off his final 3 overs, leaving Hampshire on 146 for 7 off their 35 overs.

Wiltshire lost Miles Kantolinna in the 4th over with the score only 3 before Tom Stagg and Will Thomas batted with good discipline and concentration against tight bowling, taking the score to 29 off 13 overs.  Hampshire turned to spin in the middle section of the Wiltshire innings and their spinners gave very little away.  Tom Stagg was finally bowled for 11 in the 14th over by Neal, an off spinner who got one to turn sharply for his wicket and ended with figures of 1 for 1 off 6 overs.  Will Thomas followed in the 18th over for 9, smartly stumped off a good leg break from Robertson.  Rhys Davies came in at no. 4 and immediately gave the innings some impetus as Wiltshire added 25 runs in a 5 over spell before Robertson picked up the wickets of Davies for 12 and Luke Curtis for 2 in quick succession to complete a spell of 3 for 7 off 4 overs and leave Wiltshire on 60 for 5 after 24 overs.  Dan Call and Arran Aujla batted out 5 maidens before Call was the 6th wicket to fall.  Woods and Weaver then fell quickly before Aujla was finally dislodged off the last ball of the innings having batted defiantly for 10 overs, giving Roberston his 4th wicket and figures of 4 for 8 off 6 overs.  Wiltshire finished up on 72 for 9.

Wiltshire are already showing a strong team spirit having trained together through the Winter and they learned a lot from this tough first match.  Excellent bowling from Duffell (4 for 21), Stagg (2 for 15) and Curtis (1 for 15) was supported by a good all round fielding display.  Batting was tough but Davies (12), Stagg (11), Thomas (9) and Aujla (2) all occupied the crease for more than 10 overs which will help build confidence for the games ahead.
