Wiltshire v Hampshire - ECB Cup Quarter Finals
For the quarter final of the ECB 50 over County Cup, Wilts were drawn against Hampshire to be played at the Rose Bowl. Showers were forecast during the day, but there was only one short interruption for rain. Hants won the toss and asked Wilts to bat.
The Wilts openers found runs hard to come by against a very accurate Hants bowling attack. At the end of the 20th over Wilts were only on 36 for 2. Numbers 3 and 4, Craig Miles and Jack Haines batted very sensibly and patiently to build a decent total. They slowly started to gain confidence and the runs started to accumulate. We finally reached 100 in the 39th over, but without losing any more wickets. The last 10 overs proved to be a bit of a run fest with 92 being scored. Jack Haines who had batted brilliantly was out for a County best 61 in the 47th over. Craig Miles continued his excellent run of form hitting 8 fours and a six in his innings of 72 not out. James Lavis came in right at the end and blasted 14 from 7 balls to bring Wilts to a competitive total of 192 for 4. Wilf Marriott was the pick of the Hants bowlers only conceding 5 runs and taking 2 wickets in his 10 overs.
Hants, fielding 3 West of England batsmen, got off to a bad start with James Lavis getting opener Gibson caught behind for 4. Craig Miles then shattered no 3 Jacob George’s stumps for 4. Jack Dymoke bowling slow outswingers had Wilf Marriott caught by Reynolds for 12. Their 3 West of England batsmen were out for a total of 20 runs. The ever reliable spin of Brad Dawson was introduced and he soon stopped the flow of runs, his 10 overs only conceded 12 runs and 3 wickets. Dymoke, bowling in tandem with Dawson, had another wicket and Hants were really struggling on 91 for 8. However, a 9th wicket partnership 47 had Hants thinking that the match was back in the balance. With plenty of overs remaining Craig Miles was re-introduced into the attack and soon the no 10 Woods was bowled. A quality run out from Dawson finished off the innings with Hants on 140 all out.
The U15s now travel to Oakham School on the 11th and 12th August to play the semi finals and finals against the winners of the quarter final between Warwickshire and Yorkshire, and Lancs and Essex who have already qualified for the semi finals.
Wiltshire v Dorset - Sunday 5th July
Wiltshire v Oxfordshire - Sunday 28th June
For the second successive weekend Wilts U15s played Oxfordshire this time in the ECB U15 County Championship. The venue was at Stonesfield CC and another marvellous sunny day greeted us. Oxfordshire won the toss and batted.
Oxfordshire got off to a steady start with no alarms. Wilts’ opening bowlers could not get any penetration on a slow wicket. As early as the 12th over, spin in the form of Brad Dawson was introduced and he soon had opener Sabin caught at slip by Craig Miles. The opening stand of 59 was in marked contrast to the previous week’s score of 75 all out. Oxford continued steadily and spin was bowled from both ends. The 2nd wicket fell at 84 to Charlie Turrell. Another 46 was added for the next wicket when opener Barrett was LBW to Dawson for a steady 52. Wilts continued to toil hard for their wickets. A great throw from Jack Dymoke ran out their no 5, Coles. Taylor hit a quick 24 at the end with Oxfordshire finishing on 205 for 7 off 57 overs. Brad Dawson bowled 20-4-56-4 and was well supported by Charlie Turrell 17-1-69-2.
Wilts openers Guy Brothwood and Michael Reynolds now had 48 overs to get the total of 205 to win the game. The opening attack was seen off with no chances given and the running between the wickets was very sharp. After tea, Oxford changed to an all spin attack. This, however, failed to slow the scoring down, singles and the odd boundary kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely. The 100 partnership came in the 24th over with Reynolds already on 50 shortly followed by Brothwood. The 150 partnership was reached in the 32nd over, with the pair timing the ball well and still offering no chances. Reynolds was finally out for 88 caught at mid on for an outstanding partnership of 187. Brothwood followed in the next over caught at square leg for 83. This left Craig Miles and Jack Dymoke to get the winning runs in the 43rd over.
Another excellent result with victory set up by the spin of Dawson and Turrell and the outstanding batting of Brothwood and Reynolds.

In reply, some excellent bowling from all of Wiltshire's bolwers ended up with Oxfordshire being bolwed out for just 75. The pick of the bowlers was Brad Dawson who returned figures of 5 for 27 in 8 overs. He was ably supported by Craig Miles, 2 for 12, James Lavis, 1 for 13 and Ben Gardner, 2 for 10. Wiltshire v Gloucestershire - Sunday 14th June
Wiltshire U15s’ 3rd ECB Group 6 County Cup game against Gloucestershire took place
at Kings College, Gloucester. A bright warm sunny day greeted us. Captain Guy Brothwood won the toss and elected to bat on a firm track at Kings.
It proved to be a good toss to win as openers Guy Brothwood and Michael Reynolds were soon into their stride and the runs came at a very fast pace. With the score on 118 off 18 overs, Michael Reynolds was out caught for 44 off 50 balls. This was an excellent opening partnership from the pair, which had laid a solid foundation. New batsman Tom Cowley continued with Brothwood, until Brothwood was also caught for a very fluent 80 off just 91 balls. Jack Haines was next in, he made a determined 17 before being given out LBW. With the score on 181 for 3 and 14 overs left, fast bowler Craig Miles strode to the crease. Striking the ball well, he was soon amongst the runs. Tom Cowley was out for 29 trying to increase the run rate towards the end. Craig Miles carried on, hitting 7 fours and 1 six in his innings of 60 off just 39 balls, but was out bowled in the penultimate over. Wilts finished with their score on 282 for 6 off 50 overs, a massive total for Gloucs to chase down.
Gloucs’ innings got off to the worst possible start with one of the openers being caught behind by wicketkeeper Tom Weaver in Craig Miles’s opening over. The opening bowlers James Lavis and Craig Miles bowled very tightly and Gloucs only scored 18 off the first 10 overs. Spin was introduced at both ends and Everton-Wallach and Dawson soon accounted for 2 more wickets. Gloucs started to rebuild and a steady partnership of 55 was brought to an end by a brilliant run out by Craig Miles. Spin from Tom Cowley continued to tie Gloucs down, his 10 overs only costing 15 runs and 1 wicket. A fine finishing spell from Greg Davies, 4-0-4-3 and James Lavis 9.2-1-23-2 saw Wilts finish as resounding winners with Gloucs all out for 152. Wiltshire won by 130 runs. A brilliant all round performance with some excellent batting, bowling and ground fielding. The final game is Sun 21 June against Oxfordshire and a win will see them through to the finals.
Wiltshire v Wales - Sunday 31st May
Wiltshire Young Guns blow away National Champions Wales.
Wiltshire U15s defeated a strong and hitherto unbeaten Wales, at the County Gound in Trowbridge last Sunday.
The day started well to match the balmy early summer sun with Wiltshire winning the toss and electing to bat.
Openers Guy Brothwood (Capt) and local boy Mike Reynolds playing on his home ground, cautiously found their feet on a firm wicket. Wales’ opening bowler Williams claimed Brothwood as his first scalp who was well caught by Gehler at mid-off. Things weren’t to improve for Wilts as a determined Reynolds fell for 7 shortly after. Enter a belligerent Tom Cowley who calmly and methodically brought some stability, thus fending off an increasingly impatient Welsh attack.
Respectable partnerships started to emerge with Jack Mynott and then Jack Haines contributing to a solid display.
Cowley was then bowled by Herring for 42 and it was time to up the tempo and set the visitors a challenge. Good contributions from Craig Miles, Brad Dawson and Jack Dymoke took the total to 156 for 7 after a full 50 overs.
As tea was taken the large crowd of followers and onlookers were anticipating a typical gutsy Welsh performance with the home supporters not looking too confident.
The Wiltshire boys took to the field focussed and anxiously awaited their fate. Enter opening pace bowler Craig Miles who tore down the wicket to deliver a fabulous first ball sucker punch to the visitors. Bewildered Callum Herring walked from the crease in disbelief as the fielders celebrated. Wales had been struck.
An excellent James Lavis then despatched Cameron Herring with just 6 runs on the board and advantage was handed to the home side. Following a brief period of consolidation by Wales, Wiltshire’s keeper and local boy Tom Weaver caught Smith who edged from a wonderous Lavis ball.
Wales were now 3 down for 25. Tom Baker took to the wicket to steady the ship, unfortunately he lost his partner Lewis to another clean Lavis ball. Wales now 4 for the same score. Things were about to go from bad to worse as Wales lost two more wickets whilst only adding 7 more runs. Miles and Lavis were irrepressible and the Wiltshire team were in high spirits.
The game then entered a steady period controlled by some tidy fielding with two wickets falling to Mynott with slip catches by Miles.
In a moment of genius by the captain Brothwood, spinner Cowley was introduced to provide some variation to the attack and duly despatched a comfortable Baker for 29 then took the final wicket next ball.
Wales were all out for 101 and Wiltshire had achieved the victory, which had previously eluded them in previous encounters.
Other notable contributions in the field came from Ben Gardner and Tom Merriman.
Witshire’s U15s next fixture is away against Gloucestershire in two weeks time.
