Ben Kavanagh 41 NO (retired)

Al Mckenzie 31 NO (retired)

Josh Grobler 14 NO

Sean Bailey 14

Hamish Walker 2-2-0-2

James Nickson 4-0-10-1

Ed Mortimer 3-0-3-1

North West won by 88 runs.

Kennet won the toss and put North West in to bat. In overcast conditions the NW openers, Kavanagh and Reed started positively. After 10 overs they were 52 - 0, but with the introduction of Wallace, a couple of wickets went quickly and he put some control on the scoring clean bowling Reed and new bat Walker (4). Mckenzie came to the crease with some impressive displays at district behind him this season, and he continued in his good form. He and Kavanagh put on 67 off the next 11 overs, both players retiring after some excellent shot play. Grobler kept the scoreboard ticking at the end with a positive 14 NO. The Kennet bowlers and fielders stuck to their task, with Harry Clarke picking up a couple of late wickets.

Kennets opening batsman were pegged back by some accurate and quick NW bowling and they were soon in deep trouble at 4 for 3 off 4 overs. Bailey and Webb then went on to put on an excellent partnership.  Against some accurate bowling and athletic NW fielding, they batted with great courage and no little skill to put on a 25 run partnership.  Walker was the pick of the bowling for NW.  Bowling quick and accurate he picked up 2 early wickets to put Kennet on the back foot.  The Kennet innings finished on 58 - 6, ( Webb 19NO, Bailey 14) leaving NW comfortable winners by 88 runs. However both teams could take lots of positives from the game.

A great season for the NW lads, who have maintained a high standard through the season. They have played with skill, determination and a good attitude. Playing 4 and winning 4, they were worthy winners of the Under 10s District League.

Salisbury U10 V West Wilts U10 - Sunday 18th July @ Dinton CC

Scorecard

Wiltshire Cricket District competition played their final game at the Under 10 age group when South District hosted West Wilts District at Dinton Cricket Club. The weather conditions were dry and both sides were looking to benefit from the good wicket and fast outfield.

South won the toss and captain Fred Davies opted to bat first, hoping to set a good total to defend.

South District opening batsmen James Wade and Henry Smith started well against some controlled West Wilts bowling. James Wade continued his fine District form working the ball into the gaps and running well while Henry Smith did exactly the same as well as hitting some good boundaries.

West Wilts opening bowlers delivered some control for their team with an excellent line and length but South kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely.

With the score on 42, West Wilts got their first wicket as Henry Smith was bowled by L Howe. Smith had batted very confidently for a good 21 runs. Fred Davies joined James Wade and Wade continued to bat fluently until he was run out for 26 runs. At this point the scoreboard was on 56-2 and West Wilts had worked hard with their bowling and fielding to keep the runs down. The Wheatley twins had bowled controlled opening spells then L Howe had bowled a good 3 over spell and P Wilson a tight 3 over spell.

Fred Davies and Oliver Hill were in partnership now for the South District and that did not last long as Davies was well caught by T Wheatley off the bowling of M Dicker for 3 runs. John Boucher then came to the crease and immediately worked the ball around nicely.

West Wilts were continuing to back up their bowlers with some good fielding and Boucher the next South batsmen to be dismissed for 5 runs. M Dicker had picked up his second wicket thanks to a simple catch by wicketkeeper Hyman, who had a good game behind the stumps.

With the score on 62-4, Oliver Hill and Harry Henage were in partnership and needed to bat sensibly together to get South District to a good score. They rotated the strike well and Heneage was able to hit some nice boundaries to move the scoreboard on.

At the end of the South District’s 25 over innings they had scored 105 runs for 4 wickets with Oliver Hill finishing on 10 not out and Harry Heneage 21 not out. All of the West Wilts 8 bowlers bowled well but the best figures were for M Dicker of 3-1-9-2 and L Howe of 3-0-9-1.

Chasing over 100 runs was always going to challenge any District side but West Wilts were definitely going to give of their best to get the required runs to win this match.

J Call and W Johnson opened the batting for West Wilts and South District struck an early blow with Fred Davies bowling J Call for 2 runs. Henry Smith and Davies bowled with good control for their initial 2 over spells as South District continued to rotate the bowling to all of the players to ensure everyone had contributed in every game this summer.

The change bowlers of James Wade and George Hayes continued with accurate bowling. W Johnson was accumulating runs well before he was bowled at George Hayes for 10 runs and then Wade struck twice in one over accounting for T Clarke for 11 runs and then P Wilson.

West Wilts were ticking the scoreboard over with singles, extras and the occasional boundary. S Williams was going well and into double figures as West Wilts pushed on. Williams was then bowled for 10 runs and this bought together Hyman and Dicker for West Wilts.

Although slightly behind the run rate required, West Wilts needed 31 runs from the final 5 overs and the partnership was going well between Hyman and Dicker. South District rotated all their bowlers and Eddie Stagg, Andrew Soutar, Oliver Hill, Ben Huntley, John Boucher and Matthew Dhanji had all bowled with good control and accuracy.

Unfortunately, Thomas Allman had injured his leg whilst completing some good fielding and was not able to bowl so with a run rate of 6 pr over for West Wilts to win the game, South District returned to their opening bowlers.

Henry Smith immediately struck with the wickets needed. He caught and bowled Hyman for a good 15 runs and followed that up by bowling Dicker for 12 runs. This partnership between Hyman and Dicker did give the West Wilts squad hope of winning the game but when they were out the task was considerably harder for the remaining West Wilts batsmen against the South’s returning bowlers. George Hayes, Fred Davies and James Wade completed further tight overs and as J Knowles was run out off the last ball of the innings, the West Wilts inning closed at 91 run for 8 wickets off their 25 overs.

The pick of the bowlers for the South District were Henry Smith 4-0-8-2 and James Wade 3-1-10-2 with further wickets for Fred Davies, George Hayes and Ben Huntley.

This was another excellent game of cricket completed between two very enthusiastic and competent teams.

Result – South District won by 15 runs

Teams – West Wilts = J Call, W Johnson, T Clarke, S Williams, P Wilson, H Hyman, M Dicker, J Knowles, S Dyer, T Wheatley, R Wheatley and L Howe.

Teams – South = James Wade, Henry Smith, Fred Davies, Ben Huntley, Matthew Dhanji, Thomas Allman, Harry Heneage, Eddie Stagg, Oliver Hill, John Boucher, Andrew Soutar and George Hayes.

North East U10 v Salisbury U10 - Sunday 4th July @ Goatacre CC

Scorecard

NORTH EAST 78 ALL OUT LOST TO SOUTH DISTRICT 82-8 BY 2 WICKETS

Forget the Twenty20, the World Cup football and Wimbledon tennis, the place to be for high sporting drama on Sunday July 4th was Goatacre Cricket Club.

The North East hosted South District in a thrilling Under 10 District encounter.

South won the toss and invited their hosts to bat first. P. Satish and P. Chahal started well playing nice and straight with Satish stroking a lovely drive for four to set the scoreboard rolling. However, it soon became evident that the low bounce would cause batsmen problems and so it proved as seven of the North East wickets were bowled.

Bhajwaj battled well to top score with 10 before becoming one of two victims for Andrew Soutar (2-9) thanks to a fine high catch by Thomas Allman. Fred Davies (2-11) also took two wickets and the other successful bowlers were Henry Smith (1-2), Harry Heneage (1-0), Oliver Hill (1-6) and Charlie Smith (1-5).

C.Hix (4), J.O’Donoghue (8) and Ethan Tull (6) all contributed as North East closed all out for 78.

The target was not a huge one but scoring runs was extremely difficult. James Wade however got South off to a brisk start as he latched onto anything loose. At 28-1 in the sixth over Henry Smith (2) was bowled by a real beauty as Josh Codling swung one back late into him. A direct hit disposed of captain Fred Davies and then a great catch in the deep by Prav Chahal ended Ben Huntley’s (4) stay.

To stand any chance of winning North East had to get Wade out. His innings had dominated the run scoring and in the 13th over they got their man as J. Chahal trapped him lbw. Wade had faced 33 balls and hit 6 fours for his 31 runs.

At 54-4, South appeared virtually home and dry but North East raised their levels with tight bowling and keen fielding and the run rate plummeted. Satish (2-8), O’Donoghue (1-9), J. Chahal (1-6) and C. Hix (1-14) had South inching to their target.

24 runs off 12 overs became 18 off 6 – could South creep over the finishing line? Eddie Stagg and Thomas Allman (4) battled to get them there but runs off the bat were at a premium and suddenly as the balls began to run out the wickets started to fall. A poor run out did South no favours but Stagg tied the scores with an over to go and two wickets in hand.

Six final chances to edge over the line! Stagg drove the first ball hard to mid-off – total mix-up, Heneage just got back. Dot ball, Dot ball – Pranab Satish was doing his bit for North East. The fourth ball was short and Stagg latched onto it with a cover drive but O’Donoghue made a crucial stop, South hadn’t taken the run – two balls left – still one required. Tension unbearable! Fifth ball – down the leg side – a diving stop by keeper Tull and so down to the last ball. The North East had made an amazing effort to get it down to this and now it was down to one off one.

Eddie Stagg (10no) kept his composure though and slashed the final ball to the third man boundary for four.

An epic game had kept parents and players on the edges of their seats to the end. Two fine teams playing good cricket at an excellent ground in fine weather – what a way to spend a Sunday morning.

Result – South District won by 2 wickets

Salisbury Under 10s v North West Under 10s - Sunday 20th June - South Wilts CC

Scorecard

Wiltshire Cricket District competition continued at the Under 10 age group when South District hosted North West District at South Wilts Cricket Club. The weather conditions were very good and both sides were looking to benefit from the good wicket and lightening fast outfield.

South won the toss and captain Henry Smith opted to field first following the same match pattern as their win against Kennett. North West were looking to set a good total to defend.

South District opening bowlers Henry Smith and James Wade started well bowling an controlled line and length and were rewarded with early wicket of Mortimer, bowled by Smith. Any loose bowling was picked up upon by the North West batsmen and was hit to the boundary across the fast outfield. Kavanagh and Brain were scoring freely when Fred Davies bowled Kavanagh. All the North West batsmen played well and hit boundaries when the ball was there to be hit. Brain batting at three looked to be positive at every opportunity. George Hayes bowled another excellent two over spell picking up the wickets of Smith and Nickson, both bowled. Although, South had taken 4 wickets, North West were continuing to score quickly. Edwards played well until he was bowled by Oliver Hill for 14 runs and this brought to the wicket McKenzie. In partnership with Brain, McKenzie scored freely from ball one with crisp, clean shots including some excellent running. This partnership continued to move the scoreboard on for the North West.

South District captain Henry Smith rotated the bowling around all of his players. Runs were still accruing and North West were on their way to posting a score of well over 100 in their 25 overs.

South District bowled with good accuracy and fielded with excellent discipline but with 5 overs remaining they need to restrict North West.

Matthew Dhanji picked up the wicket of Brain caught and bowled for a well complied 27 runs but McKenzie went on in partnership with North West wicketkeeper, Reed. They played very positively and pushed the scoreboard on until Fred Davies returned to the South attack. He ran out McKenzie for an excellent 33 and then bowled Reed for a positive 17 and then got his third wicket of the day by bowling Loffy.

At the end of the North West innings of 25 overs they had scored the extremely competitive total of 122 runs for 9 wickets. McKenzie top scored with a fluent 33 followed by Brain with 27 runs but these batsmen were very ably supported by Reed (17), Nickson (14) and Edwards (14). Fred Davies returned the best figures for South District with 3 wickets for 9 runs from his 3 overs and George Hayes also bowled well with 2 wickets for 7 runs from his 3 overs.

Needing 123 runs to win in their 25 overs, South District started very positively through Henry Smith and James Wade. Smith was very quick to hit a couple of early boundaries. North West  started their bowling with good pace and control. Walker and Loffy bowled well but the first wicket of Smith fell to an excellent catch by wicketkeeper Reed stood up to the stumps from the bowling of Loffy. Smith had scored a very positive 16 runs when a leg side delivery from Loffy caught the back of his bat and Reed reacted excellently to take a superb catch.

Fred Davies came to the crease looking to be positive but he was out to a very sharp stumping by Reed again off the bowling of Loffy for 2 runs. James Wade was batting well accumulating runs against the controlled bowling attack from the North West team.

Ben Huntley came to the crease and was immediately hitting two boundaries, one a hard hit lofted shot straight back over the bowlers head. South District needed to maintain a positive scoring rate to win the game of approx 5 runs per over at this stage and Huntley and Matthew Dhanji were bowled by McKenzie looking to keep up with the run rate.

Thomas Allman came in and was bowled by Grobbler and Eddie Stagg hit a lovely leg side boundary before again being bowled by Kavanagh. James Wade had made 16 runs but was not able to get on strike enough to really impact on the game and was bowled by Edwards when he was looking to score quickly.

North West were in control of the game with disciplined, accurate bowling  as they rotated the bowling around all their team. This was evidenced by the fact that 5 of the 7 wickets to fall at this point were bowled.

Charlie Smith, Oliver Hill and John Boucher all tried to score quickly but with the required run rate at 10 runs per over the South were not able to score quickly enough against the good bowling and fielding of the North West.

Smith scored 7 before he was bowled by Mortimer, Boucher was run out for 4 runs and the final wicket of George Hayes was taken by Graham, caught by Edwards, with the South District scoring 97 all out in 24.4 overs. Oliver Hill was 6 not out at the end.

North West District deserved their victory through the excellent individual contributions completed by all their team in hot conditions. All their skills were shown to be at a good level. South District competed well and can be pleased with their overall performance with a number of positive performances.

This was an excellent game of cricket completed between two very enthusiastic and competent teams.  Another great advert for the District competition!

Result – North West District won by 25 runs

Teams – North West = B Kavanagh, E Mortimer, S Brain, J Smith, J Nickson, T Edwards, A McKenzie, C Reed, F Loffy, J Grobbler, X Graham and H Walker.

Teams – South = James Wade, Henry Smith, Fred Davies, Ben Huntley, Matthew Dhanji, Thomas Allman, Charlie Smith, Eddie Stagg, Oliver Hill, John Boucher, Andrew Soutar and George Hayes

North East Under 10s v West Wilts Under 10s - Sunday 6th June - Wootton Bassett CC

Scorecard

NE Wilts batted first on a dry wicket with a quick outfield and some excellent batting from openers P.Chahal and P.Satish saw an opening partnership of over 50 with a run rate of 7/8 an over.  WWilts bowling was generally very good, especially from Roman and Toby Wheatley, but the batsmen were ruthless in putting away the bad ball.  WWilts captain Toby Clarke initiated the fight back by running out Chahal with a direct hit, and Bryce Furlong was unlucky not to trap Codling LBW first ball.  Codling and Griffin maintained the pace at the end after Phillip Johnson took 2 wickets (both bowled) in a second spell bowled at a very good pace.  143 for 3 after 25 overs looked a very challenging, but not unreachable target. However West Wilts would have been disappointed to concede 48 extras, that ultimately made the target too much.

Despite losing Toby Wheatley in unfortunate circumstances second over, William Johnson (35 no) and Sean Williams (16) kept the score ticking over in the face of good fielding and bowling. Clarke and Johnson then kept the chase going but the introduction of spinner S.Bharjwaj proved to be the beginning of the end.  He took 5 for 1 in 3 superb overs (including 2 wickets in 2 balls) and his ‘doosra’ that ended Harry Hyman’s stubborn resistance was probably the pick of his wickets.  North East Wilts deservedly won having played the slightly more disciplined cricket, but there was plenty of skill on show from both teams and it was played in an excellent spirit.  Well done!!

West Wilts Under 10’s v Kennet Under 10’s – Sunday 16th May – Winsley CC

The District Under 10’s tournament started with showers and wickets dominating the mornings play.  With great thanks to Winsley CC for “donating” the team their senior covered afternoon wicket for the youngest representative side to use, the match started only 15 minutes after the usual start time.

Winning the toss was vital for either team and it proved instrumental for the Kennet side, resulting in a win by four wickets with almost 13 overs to spare.  West Wilts, having to bat first, looked to have started well with James Call scoring eight off the eleven balls of the innings, before being run out off the twelfth.  Despite recovering to 16 for 1, West Wilts lost five wickets in six overs to slump to 25 for 6 with only ten overs on the board.

The West Wilts tail stuck to their task of seeing out the second half of the innings, with Sean Williams top scoring with 9 runs.  The final pair of Luke Howe and Bryce Furlong saw out six overs but fell short of reaching the 25th over.

The Kennet bowlers were excellent to a man, with very few loose balls being bowled throughout the innings. Harry Milton, Charlie Powell, Lewis Jackson all claimed two wickets during their spell.  For figures alone, Luke Smith must take special praise with two single wicket maidens being bowled in his “perfect” spell.

Kennet must have felt that the job was already completed coming to the wicket and with 11 runs coming from the first five balls, the visitors were already well on the way to an easy win.  However Elliott Forster was shocked to see his stumps thrown down by Ethan Gooderson at fine leg as he attempted a quick single.

Despite a four off his first ball, Toby Wheatley then bowled two overs that threw the game back West Wilts way.  Bowling quick and straight, he removed James Patten-Hall and Lewis Jackson in successive balls.  His second over saw a muddled run out and then the dismissal of Harry Milton with another quick straight ball.  Being rested after his two overs, he returned to bowl the final ball of the game with was too full and quick for the batsman, the keeper and the fine leg as it ran for 4 byes.  Toby was to finish with figures of 2.1/0/9/3 to prove himself the top West Wilts performer.

Phillip Wilson bowled Charlie Powell to leave Kennet at 29 for 6, but with 18 overs to score the remaining 21 runs, the Kennet lower order batted sensibily to run out winners with 12.5 overs to spare.  Luke Smith followed up his bowling spell with a chanceless 6 not out, Charlie Webb was more chancy, with a couple of balls landing between fielders.  However Charlie’s two fours from consecutive balls turned the game back Kennet’s way for the final time.

Credit must go to the West Wilts fielders, with Ethan Gooderson getting sideways movement off the seam without success and James Call getting spin from the wet wicket.  Ultimately, Kennet ran out deserved winners on the first day of the competition.

West Wilts          49 all out (22.5 overs)

Kennet                 51-6 (12.1 overs, Toby Wheatley 3-9)

Kennet win by 4 wickets. West Wilts 1pt, Kennet 3pts

Kennet Under 10s v Salisbury Under 10s - 6th June 2010 @ Great Bedwyn CC

Scorecard

Wiltshire Cricket District competition continued at the Under 10 age group when Kennett District hosted South District at the picturesque Great Bedwyn Cricket Club. The weather conditions were good and both sides were fortunate to be able to play at this excellent cricket facility.

Kennett won the toss and captain Harry Clarke elected to make the most of the good conditions and bat first.

South District opening bowlers Henry Smith and James Wade started very well bowling an excellent line and length and were rewarded with early wickets. James Wade picked up three early wickets, all bowled, and they were a good reward for his accuracy. South District captain Henry Smith rotated the bowling around all of his players. Runs were still hard to come by for the Kennett batsmen as the bowling changed. George Hayes bowled with some swing and picked up a further 3 wickets from his 2 over spell leaving Kennett with 23 runs on the board with 6 wickets down.

However, Kennett captain Harry Clarke and Sean Bailey fought back very well with an excellent partnership. They played extremely straight and defending the ball well and making the most of the run scoring opportunities when they came about. Their partnership moved the score for into the 60s before Sean Bailey was caught by the diving Charlie Smith at mid wicket off the bowling of Harry Heneage. It was a superb catch to dismiss Bailey after an excellent innings of 19.

Harry Heneage was bowling a controlled line and length and took a further wicket before then bowling Harry Clarke. Clarke scored a valuable and solid 23 runs for his team. Heneage then took a further two quick wickets to finish the Kennett innings on the score of 67.

South District bowled with good accuracy and fielded with excellent discipline including two excellent catches. Wade and Hayes both finished with 2 overs, 3 wickets for 3 runs and Heneage returned the excellent figures of 4 wickets for 4 runs from his 2 overs. All the South District bowlers bowled well and it is noteworthy to mention the wicketkeeping of Eddie Stagg.

The innings of both Harry Clarke and Sean Bailey were key in Kennett setting South the target of 68 runs for victory.

Kennett started their bowling with good pace and control. Lewis Jackson and Luke Smith opened well but James Wade was quick to play a number of good shots to get the scoreboard moving. All of the Kennett bowlers bowled well and it was Wade who was taking the attack to Kennett. He had made a powerful 25, full of good shots before being bowled by Matt Collis. Kennett continued to bowl with good control and made South work extremely hard for the required runs to win the game. South’s other opener and captain, Henry Smith, was accumulating the required runs to see his team home in a solid fashion. Kennett rotated the bowling around all their players and good spells were completed all their players but they could not take further wickets. Their fielding was of a high standard throughout the South’s innings. Smith and Thomas Allman took South past the Kennett total of 67 from 19.4 overs. Smith finishing on a solid and well crafted 16 not out and Allman on 6 not out.

This was an excellent game of cricket completed between two very enthusiastic and competent teams in an beautiful environment at Great Bedwyn CC. A great advert for the District competition!

Result – South District won by 9 wickets

Teams – Kennett = Elliott Forster, Luke Smith, James Hall, Lewis Jackson, Charlie Powell, Harry Mitton, Harry Clarke, Sean Bailey, Callum Barnes, Matt Collis, Alex Jewell and Sam Taylor.

Teams – South = James Wade, Henry Smith, Thomas Allman, Charlie Smith, Eddie Stagg, Oliver Hill, Harry Heneage, John Boucher, James Brown, Andrew Soutar and George Hayes
