Salisbury hosted North West and after winning the toss elected to bat first. Salisbury started cautiously against some strong opening bowling from K George (0-7) and A Graham (1-17) but looked solid in their play.

Matt Rushmere (11) was the first to fall, controversially caught behind off Graham. After some lusty blowsRupert  Nodder (13) was next to fall caught in the covers off away skipper P Foston (1-19). After Nick Fiddy departed for 9 Nick Partridge joined Will Harries and the pair added 34 for the 4th wicket. Harries (31) was bowled by P Lochab (2-12) which brought Hely to the crease.

In the light off some tight bowling Salisbury had to up the run rate in order to post a competitive total. Shortly after the 2nd drinks break both Partridge (33) and Hely (8) departed in quick succession. With Salisbury still looking to up the rate they lost their last 4 wickets cheaply, 2 of which by way of direct hit run outs.

Salisbury finished 136 all out with 5 of their 45 overs still remaining.

Salisbury knew that quick wickets were the order of the day and Partridge (2-38) duly obliged trapping both T Blundell and A Page LBW for ducks. The introduction of Kieran McClure (1-18) then saw Gardners off stump uprooted leaving the visitors 52-3.

However at the other end K George had other ideas and mixed solid defence with attack with anything loose disappearing to the boundary. When George brought up his 50 North West were nearly home and the re-introduction of Nick Fiddy (1-13) saw to the end of Lochab, bowled for 13.

Graham (9*) joined George (74*) and passed the winning total with 18 overs remaining to seal a 7 wicket victory for the vistors.

Kennet District U15 v Salisbury District U15 - 6th June 2010

Salisbury made the away trip to Devizes and after losing the toss were inserted into bat.

A good opening partnership of 82 between Charlie Gent and Matt Rushmere got Salisbury off to a solid start before Rushmere (32) miss timed a drive and was caught off the bowling of Durnford (1-27). Wickets then fell around Gent as he continued to keep the score board ticking over.

Nick Partridge (14) offered support but was unfortunately bowled by one which kept low. Gent was also out shortly after for a fine 72 as he looked to up the tempo of the innings.

Nick Fiddy was now at the crease and after a steady start peepered the broundary with anything loose. Fiddy (55*) brought up his hard hitting 50 with his 8th four and along with Dom Sell (14*) took Salisbury over the 200 mark to finish on 225 for 9 off their 45 overs.

After tea Kennett commenced their innings and got off to a slow start. Sell (1-28) picked up the first wicket to fall thanks to an excellent one handed catch by Rupert Nodder. Kennets captain Kent then came to the wicket and looked assured from the start.

The 2nd and final wicket fell 4 balls after tea when Gent (1-25) had Andrews (37) caught again by Nodder. Charlton joined Kent and together gradually took the game away from Salisbury and both brought up their fifties with relative ease.

With 3 overs remaining Kennett reached their target with Kent finishing 81 not out and Charlton 61 not out to win the game and and complete a fine partnership by the pair.

West Wilts 175 for 8 off 45 overs

North East won the toss and elected to bat. West Wilts got of to a good start by taking the first wicket with the score on 8 after 6 overs, some good bowling by the West Wilts bowlers restricted the score to 65 for 1 after 20 overs.

Tom Dixon and Joe Paish continued to build a slow partnership of 70 runs for the North East, before Tom was out for a patient 26. Both batsmen displayed good shot selection.

Joe Paish  and Jack Bramwell showed their class with outstanding batting with Jack Bramwell dominating the West Wilts bowling and scored an impressive 53 with Joe scoring a very good 35.  Both batsman running hard between the wickets and finding the gaps to increase the run rate.

Ben Mattick  then scored 29 not out, playing shots all round the wicket and finding the gaps to pick up quick singles, taking the final total to 224 for 8 of 45 overs.

Credit to North East batters for picking up the run rate after 20 overs, some excellent shot selection and outstanding running between the wickets.

West Wilts got of to a flying start with an opening stand of 80 of 20 0vers. Tristan 34 and Evans 32 both playing some great shots all around the wicket. Some light rain followed. After the drinks break disciplined bowling by Arun 3 wickets, Jack 2 wickets, Joe 2 wickets, Harry and Ben restricted West Wilts to 175 of 45 overs. AJ Vobbs for West Wilts made a fighting 29.

Overall it was a well-disciplined batting performance by North East putting a good total on the board, followed by some accurate bowling after 20 overs to win the game.

My man of the match would be Jack Branwell for is 53 runs and 2 wickets.

West Wilts Under 15 v Kennet Under 15 - 16th May 2010

West Wilts entertained Kennet at the picturesque Erlestoke CC. West Wilts won the toss and elected to field on a day when rain was always going to be an influence on the day, to a greater or lesser extent.

West started strongly removing both Kennet openers quite cheaply, which brought Kennet skipper Harry Kent to the wicket, who batted with maturity and control to steady the innings. Wickets continued to fall until Rory Smith (43) joined Kent to put the innings back on track. The innings closed on 226 for 7. Tuck was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 34 from his allotted 9 overs, bowling with accuracy and aggression. Kent finished with a superb undefeated 109, to notch up his first ever century.

West began positively with both openers looking to score. Wickets fell steadily and the home team gradually fell behind the asking rate. Leeworthy and Rogers came together and started to take the game away from Kennet with confident hitting, and the bowling side seemed to have no answer.

Thompson, Bowen and Dunford took some key wickets and eventually Kennet bowled West Wilts out for 182, winning by 44 runs. Thompson returned figures of 3 for 15 from his allotted overs, with 2 wickets apiece for Bowen and Dunford, and the key stumping of skipper Tuck by Keeper Andrew from the bowling of Palmer for just 4.The final result was far closer than the score would lead you to believe. The game was played in a fantastic spirit and I was most impressed by the discipline of both teams.

REPORT

After losing the toss and being asked to bat the North West district got off to a steady start scoring at around 4 runs per over during the first 15 over session.  A few wickets were lot during this session with the score at drinks a fairly even 62 for 3.

From this point onwards the North West dominated with the bat.  Kallan George in particular plundered a very aggressive 80 which included 4 sixes and 7 fours.  He was well supported initially by Evans and following his dismissal Chris Baker continued the onslaught with an undefeated 83.  Following the dismissal of George, Hayes also scored quickly to complete the innings at 284 for 6.

The North East bowlers stuck to their task well and particularly in the field gave a very credible performance.  Unfortunately once the two main batters for the North West got going the NE attack was unable to exert sufficient pressure to limit the score.

In reply the North East innings got off to a bad start with the loss of two early wickets.  After a brief recovery by Joynson and Miller they were both dismissed along with Wiseman to leave the North West struggling at 60 for 5.  Walduck and Leyhal batter sensibly mixed with controlled aggression to build a partnership of over 100 to bring some respectability to the scorecard.  Walduck was eventually removed for a well made 56 and Leyhal soon followed for 44.  Further wickets fell in the final few overs to leave Foston and Hayes with 3 wickets each.

The North West side ran out well deserved winners by 99 runs with the difference in age of the two sides (NE contained 9 under 14’s) a factor along with the ability and physical strength of George and Baker in particular with the bat during the first innings.  It was surprising that the game was completed with only a few relatively short interruptions for the weather and whilst the difference between the two sides was significant the game produced a number of very good individual performances on both sides.

Many thanks go to Marshfield CC for hosting the fixture as well as those involved with the running of the game (Steve George, Wayne Pascal and Richard Joynson) which was enjoyed by players and spectators alike despite the cold and occasional showers.
