Wallop Finals Day
Corsham Wyverns overcame both the opposition and the British weather this weekend to be crowned Wiltshire Wallop winners for 2017.
Following a season of hard fought qualifying matches, the Wiltshire Wallop Finals Day was a damp but hard fought event at Corsham Cricket Club.
The WEPL Premier One side hosted three WEPL Prem Two sides in the form of Chippenham, Goatacre and Burbage & Easton Royal.
With the weather forecast looking to turn as the day progressed, Corsham were victorious in the first semi final. Setting Burbage & Easton Royal a target of 150 that was to prove too much for them.
The second semi final between Chippenham and Goatacre was affected by the weather, however Goatacre successfully chased down Chippenham’s first innings target of 124 in the final over of the innings.
With heavy rain falling, the teams and officials came together to decide on a suitable match format to ensure that a winner could be decided on the day.
Therefore all involved settled for a much shortened five overs a side match with Corsham batting first.
With thanks to their captain Ashur Morrison, who posted a half century, Corsham set Goatacre a target of 76 runs to win.
The Goatacre side made a tremendous effort to chase down the score. After two overs they were ahead of the rate having scored 38 off just twelve balls.
However Corsham Wyverns were able to sufficiently restrict the batters and ended the day winners by two runs in a spectacular, if damp final
