Women’s and Girls’ Cricket

Club Competitions

Currently in Wiltshire, we do not run a girls or women's league, mainly because all clubs are at very different levels in terms of the numbers of players they have, the age groups of these players and the abilities of these players. However, this does not mean that there is not competitive opportunities avalable to female cricketers:

Under 9 Club Kwik Cricket Festivals

Throughout every Sunday of the season a club in Wiltshire will host an under 9 Kwik Cricket festival. The festivals are played with traditional Kwik Cricket rules. These festivals are open to girls only teams and please note that girls only teams could enter and play as an under 11 team (i.e. girls are able to play in an age group younger competition).

The under 9 festivals are adminstered by the Wiltshire Youth Cricket League. Under 9 festival dates are normally published in April each year at which points clubs are invited to contact the host club of each respective festival regarding entry in to that festival. Please note that clubs can choose to enter as few or as many competitions as they wish.

If you would like to find out more about the under 9 festivals available in the county, please contact the Wiltshire Youth Cricket League secretary Paul Rowson at paul_rowson@btinternet.com or 07803 740648.

League Cricket

Vipers Indoor Cricket League

We are delighted to announce that as part of our partnership with Kia Super League Champions, Southern Vipers, we are able to offer Wiltshire Cricket/Southern Vipers Indoor Cricket competitions.

As part of our working partnership with the Vipers, all the counties across the consortium have been invited to run their own women and girls indoor league competitions.

What are the rules?

In short, the games will be played under “standard” indoor cricket rules:

  • Teams will be six a side, match day squads will be limited to eight players.
  • Matches will be ten overs long
  • Players will be required to wear full batting kit as per the outdoor game
  • Matches will not be “hardball”, but will use a suitable indoor type ball (as with the men’s indoor game).
  • Boundaries will be scored by hitting the wall behind the bowler – 4s along the ground and 6s with direct hits.
  • Runs will be scored for hitting the other walls/ceiling and for running between the wickets
  • Batters will retire on reaching 25 or higher, with players able to return if overs remain at the end of the innings – last batter stands
  • Maximum of three overs per bowler.

So, 2 competitions?

  • The Under 13s competition is open to girls who are in school up to year eight.
  • The Over 13s competition is open to girls and women playing Under 15s and adult cricket.

More information can be found on our Vipers indoor competition page

Wiltshire Youth Cricket League

Bath and District Youth Cricket League

Similarly to the Wiltshire Youth League, several clubs have chosen to enter a girls only team in to the Bath and District Youth Cricket League. The same rules apply in that a girls only team could enter the league and play in an age group younger.

The Bath and District Youth Cricket League is 20 overs at all age groups with fixtures played on a mid week evening which provides a different option to that of the Wiltshire Youth League.

Performance Super 4s Competition

In an attempt to increase the amount of matches that are available to women and girls to play within the county (post under 15), Wiltshire Cricket have introduced a match play programme entitled Super 4s.

The programme is available to any female player playing Under 15s cricket and older, to take part in a series of 40 over and T20 matches. Instead of having club or district based teams, the programme creates representative teams which aim to be equally balanced. The purpose of the competition is to provide a level of cricket just below that of full representative cricket.

To find out more, visit the Super 4s page.

Participation Super 4s Competition

In recognition that there is currently a lack of womens club cricket in the county, Wiltshire Cricket is going to mirror the Performance Super 4s competition by running a series of participation festivals whereby any women interested in playing some informal, fun and social cricket can attend a neutral venue to play in some competitive matches.
