Wiltshire Cricket launches its women and girls club opportunities for the 2019 winter

With Christmas approaching and 2019 coming almost too quickly, Wiltshire Cricket is pleased to say that there are plenty of opportunities for women’s and girls cricket in the New Year.

2019 is set to be an important year for Women and Girls Cricket, with lots of clubs now involved with Women’s soft ball cricket or ECB Women’s competitions (19 women’s clubs already involved for 2019 + additional girls clubs).

The following message will cover a couple of the winter/pre-season offers, which we hope will be of interest to clubs and will hopefully encourage more ladies/girls to take part in cricket (even if it’s for the first time!).

Vipers Indoor Cricket League (Under 13 Competition)

The Vipers indoor league is designed to provide Under 13 girls with an opportunity to put their skills into practice before the outdoor cricket season, and therefore the competition will be a paired format league, which creates plenty of opportunity for the girls to practice. (It will also likely be an indoor ball – pads not necessary).

Teams will consist of 8 players. County players are permitted in this competition, but please ensure that club cricketers are given equal opportunity, as they are less likely to have practiced as much over the winter period.
In terms of cost, it is our ambition to allow teams to enter FREE OF CHARGE! However, please note, that we may add an admin fee in March (No more than £10 per team) to cover trophy costs etc. (Currently awaiting budget plans).

Details:

Dates: Sunday 31st March, Sunday 7th April, Sunday 14th April, Sunday 28th April
Times: 12pm – 4pm (Each Team’s exact time will vary)
Venue: St Mary’s Sport Centre, Calne
ENTRY DEADLINE: SUNDAY 13TH JANUARY
Maximum number of teams - 8

Women’s Indoor Cricket League

With ladies cricket becoming more popular every year in Wiltshire, we will again be running a Women’s Indoor League prior to the season commencing. The soft ball league will provide opportunities for teams to practice their skills before the outdoor season and perhaps encourage some new ladies to take part where possible.

Much like last year, there is likely to be a range of abilities, from beginners to experienced cricketers, and so we will do our best to ensure that fixtures are evenly matched to give both teams a worthwhile and enjoyable fixture.

Again, the aim is keep this competition FREE OF CHARGE (A small admin fee, no more than £10 per team, may be charged in March to cover trophies, if funding plan does not cover this – although, I am hoping this will not be the case).

Details:

Dates: Sunday 31st March, Sunday 7th April, Sunday 14th April, Sunday 28th April
Times: 4pm – 7pm (Each Team’s exact time will vary)
Venue: St Mary’s Sport Centre, Calne
Teams of 8
ENTRY DEADLINE: SUNDAY 13TH JANUARY
Maximum number of teams - 8

Women's Coaching Workshops

As Women’s Cricket is growing each year, we feel it is equally important to ensure that ladies are given as many opportunities in the coaching environment as they are in the playing environment. For this reason, Wiltshire Cricket will be putting together a series of ‘Coaching workshops’ for any ladies (15+) involved with cricket, whether this is All Stars Activators, WSB Coaches, Team Captains or just players etc.

The workshops will cover the main skills in cricket, and will be tailored around ‘How to coach’ and ‘What to coach’. The aim for these sessions is to provide valuable information to ladies who are interested in helping with their own sessions or improving their own game.

The content of the workshops will cover plenty of training ideas, as well as some in-depth coaching information, which will overlap with the content in a Level 2 coaching course, albeit condensed.
It is important to note that this course will NOT be certified, and attendees will not be qualified as coaches, but will in fact gain valuable knowledge about how to improve their game, and perhaps others around them.

Over the 3 sessions, it is hoped that the following topics will be covered. (These topics are subject to change).

  • Bowling Core Principles
  • Bowling Practices
  • How to use indoor nets effectively
  • Batting Core Principles
  • Batting Practices
  • Introduction to a bowling machine
  • Fielding Core Principles
  • Fielding practices
  • Batting, Bowling and Fielding Games.

In addition to this, if candidates feel there are some aspects of cricket that they would like the tutors to cover, please feel free to suggest these for consideration.
