Wiltshire Cricket Board Easter Camps 2010 - Girls Coaching
Wiltshire Cricket Board is looking to encourage local girls to get active this Easter with two cricket camps being held on dates during the holiday. With camps in the North (Chippenham Dome) and in the South (Five River's Leisure Centre, Salisbury) of the county, girls will have the opportunity to experience world class coaching from three international cricketers.
Lisa Keightley, the Wiltshire Women's and Girl's Community Coach will lead the sessions. Lisa has played 9 times in test matches for Australia and 82 one day internationals. Lisa will have working alongside her Charlotte Edwards, the current England Womens player and Ashes winning captain with a playing history of 18 test matches and 134 one day internationals. The final member of the coaching team is Caroline Atkins, England's opening batter with a record of 8 test matches and 58 one day internationals.
As you can see the quality of the coaches is quite incredible and for only £30.00 for two four hour sessions, it is great value for money. The Chippenham sessions are taking place at the Chippenham Dome on 6th and 7th April, with sessions running from 10am to 2pm (with a half hour break for lunch). The Salisbury sessions take place at Five River's Leisure Centre on 15th April (session time 10am to 2pm) and 16th April (session time 9am to 1pm).
Application forms can be obtained by e-mail from Ali Goddard - ali.goddard@wiltshirecricket.co.uk
Warminster CC Cricketforce
Warminster Cricket Club is preparing to take part in NatWest CricketForce on 19th, 20th and 21st March 2010 – an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) initiative aimed at rejuvenating local cricket clubs and giving volunteers an opportunity to get involved.
Warminster Cricket Club is expecting around 50 volunteers, including all senior players, club members and even the Cricket Development Manager for Wiltshire and a representative from the ECB to help with the various painting and grounds maintenance projects. The volunteer work would have cost an estimated £10,000 to complete, meaning a huge injection of funds for cricket clubs across the country.
NatWest CricketForce is the biggest annual volunteering event in sport and is set to attract enough volunteers to fill Lord’s Cricket Ground three times over (85,000).
Martyn Hutton (Warminster Cricket Club’s NatWest CricketForce Coordinator) said:
“NatWestCricketForce will enable much needed work to take place at clubs across the county ensuring the 2010 season gets off to the best possible start.
All players start their cricket careers at local clubs and it is crucial that we support the game’s development. Good facilities and a fun environment can be the difference between youngsters staying with cricket or not and NatWest CricketForce helps make clubs a real focus for community sports activities and volunteering opportunities”.
Other local organisations have also signed up to support the project with our main supplier being the Build Center in Frome who are donating the vast majority of materials required for Warminster’s projects.
Pete Sykes, Wiltshire’s Cricket Development Manager, said: “We saw clubs do more for themselves in two days last year than they had for years before. It made a real difference to clubs including increased revenue, improved facilities, increased participation and a great sense of community spirit”.
Anyone belonging to a cricket club who would like to take part in the initiative should visit www.ecb.co.uk/natwestcricketforcefor details of how to sign up. Or, if you could spare a few hours on 19th, 20th and 21st March 2010 to help your local club please leave your details with natwestcricketforce@ecb.co.uk.

Notes to editors:
· In 2009 1,514 clubs and 85,000 volunteers took part in Cricket Force. In 2002, Lingfield CC (Surrey) was the very first CricketForce pilot club.

Walk with Sir Ian Botham
Sir Ian Botham is undertaking another walk in aid of Leukaemia Research this year to mark the 25th anniversary since his first walk. This year there is an opportunity for you to walk with Sir Ian.
Here is a basic outline but a lot more information and registration is at www.beefy25.com
This year Sir Ian walks again for Leukaemia Research. It is the 25th anniversary since his first walk, and Leukaemia Research 50th anniversary, so a special year. He will walk through 10 towns in 10 days and each day he can be joined in a park walk by the general public.
We want as many people, cricket clubs and schools to "Walk with Beefy" as possible. Each day will be split into 2 parts, the first half of the day Sir Ian will walk from a local M&S store around the streets collecting money, and arrive at a park where he will collect all the members of public who have signed up at www.beefy25.com, he will walk a further 4 miles, and the members of public can follow him around the park.
Essentially what we need is for each player/person to register individually at a cost of £10. You will receive a t-shirt and a medal to remember the day by.
Wiltshire One Year Action Plan
Following a Board meeting on 16th December 2009 the WCB One Year Action Plan for 2010 has been approved and submitted to ECB. This document details the priority actions that the WCB will be working towards during 2010. These are Improvement Actions on top of the normal service that the Board provides in terms of workforce education, performance and schools activity.
Club Questionnaire Results
The WCB has recently completed its self assessment process for 2009. The self assessment process helps the WCB identify its priorities for its annual Action Plan that is submitted to ECB. The WCB is currently in the process of writing its 2010 Action Plan and this will be posted on the website shortly. However, in the meantime please find attached the resultsof our club questionnaires that were completed recently. These questionnaires have helped the Board identify the areas in which it is performing well and the areas in which it needs to improve.
Many thanks to those clubs that took the time to complete these.
Wiltshire County Youth Presentation Evening
The Wiltshire Cricket Board held its inaugural county youth presentation evening on Friday night at Devizes Town Hall. This was to recognise some of the excellent performances across the county girls and boys squads and to celebrate the fantastic success of Wiltshire’s age group teams in 2009.
The highlight of this success was the achievement of the county under 13, 14 and 15 squads in all qualifying for the quarter finals of the ECB National Knockout cup. The under 15’s actually went on to the national finals, the only non first class county to do so, where they competed with Essex, Lancashire and Yorkshire.
These fantastic achievements have followed on from the sponsorship agreement that was signed between the Board and hotel and holiday resort company Seasons Holidays earlier in the year. For this reason Friday night was made even more special by the fact that Seasons Holidays Chairman Barry Hurley was in attendance to present some of the awards.
Also, in attendance was speaker Richard Scott who is an ex professional cricketer and the current Middlesex CCC 1stXI coach. Richard gave an excellent speech and ran a question and answer session on aspects of the professional game today.
The format of the evening saw performance awards given out to players who made noticeable contributions to games throughout the season. There were then separate player of the year awards given out to one player per age group.
The evening culminated in Alan Crouch, the WCB Head of Performance, presenting two special achievement awards and an overall player of the year award for all age groups. The first recipient of a special achievement award was wicketkeeper and batsman Harry Hawkins who has recently been offered an academy contract with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and has also been selected for the South West England tour to West Indies in the new year. The second special achievement award was given to Craig Miles. Fast bowler Craig was influential in the success of the under 15 county team in 2009 but also developed his batting enormously to bat at number 4 and make several big contributions to the team’s success. The year culminated in Craig being selected for England Under 15’s.
The overall player of the year award for 2009 was given to Tom Alsop. Tom enjoyed an exceptional season for the county under 13’s for whom he made contributions of 114* against Gloucestershire, 96 against Oxfordshire and 55 against Middlesex.
The presentation evening was a great success and did great justice to the fantastic efforts of not only the players but also the managers and coaches that have worked with the county squads during the past year. The success of the age group teams and individual players is also great representation of the difference that Seasons Holidays’ sponsorship has made to Wiltshire Cricket.

2009/2010 Coaching and Umpiring Courses Confirmed
The Wiltshire Cricket Board has now confirmed the dates for its Coach Education and Umpiring courses for 2009/2010. Our Coach Education programme includes a female only UKCC1 as well as three further UKCC1 courses and a UKCC2.
With regards to the umpiring courses we are delivering three of the new ECB ACO Level 1 courses throughout the county. This is in recognition of the need for us to recruit more qualified umpires in the county so that more leagues are being officiated by qualified people.
Under 14s make it a hat trick for Wiltshire teams!
Congratulations to Wiltshire Under 14s who have followed on from the success of the county under 13s and 15s in reaching the quarter finals of the ECB Cup. It is a fanatastic achievement for Wiltshire to have reached the quarter finals at all three age groups and credit goes out to all of the players, coaches and managers.
The under 14s secured their place in the quarter finals by beating Oxfordshireto make it four wins out of four in the group stages of the competition. This now means that Wiltshire meet Hampshire on Friday 24th July at South Wilts Cricket Club.
Simon Jones takes part in Friends Provident Chance to Shine Festival in Salisbury
Simon Jones, one of the stars of England’s successful 2005 Ashes campaign, was on hand on Friday 10th July at South Wiltshire Cricket Club as local Salisbury schools took part in the Friends Provident Chance to Shine Festival.
Over 60 children from Harnham, Nomansland & Hamptworth, St Mark’s , Wilton & Barford C of E Junior Schools and Woodlands County Primary School took part in the day, which was eventually won by St Mark’s who defeated Nomansland in the Final.
Throughout the day, Simon Jones put the children through their paces providing coaching tips and advice in between games, as well as presenting the Trophy to the winning school, “It’s great to see so many young kids getting involved in the game through Chance to Shine. Cricket really took off after we won the Ashes in 2005, and with all eyes focused on the current series, hopefully the lads will be able to win back the urn and give cricket another boost.”
Now in its fourth year, Chance to Shine recognises the power of cricket in helping young people acquire important skills, values and attitudes for their future lives. It is delivered through individual projects across England and Wales, with each project providing structured coaching and competition as well as equipment, facility development and training for teachers and coaches.
Karen Burrell, Head of Marketing Services at Friends Provident, commented “We are proud to be a supporter of the Chance to Shine initiative. It is a natural extension to our current cricket sponsorships from the Friends Provident Trophy, through to England Age Group sides and grass roots cricket with Chance to Shine. It also provides our staff with a great opportunity to be involved in the local community and we’ve had a number of FRIENDS® employees here today helping with scoring, umpiring and providing refreshments!”
Stuart Priscott, Chance to Shine’s Regional Manager for the South and South West added “It’s been a fantastic day for the kids – a good day’s cricket, coaching from an Ashes winner in Simon Jones and the opportunity to get up close to the Friends Provident Trophy. Who knows, in ten years time these kids might have their own chance to play in a Friends Provident Trophy Final at Lord’s!”.
This year, the Friends Provident Trophy Final is going to be a South Coast affair as the Hampshire Hawks take on the Sussex Sharks at Lord’s on Saturday 25th July – both sides have history in the competition with Hampshire returning to Lord’s for the third time in five years, while Sussex will be making their 10th appearance in a Trophy Final.
Congratulations to Wiltshire Under 13s!
Following on from the achievments of our under 15s the county under 13s have reached the quarter finals of the ECB County Cup following their victory over Oxfordshire on Sunday 12th July. Congratulations to the team and we wish them the best of luck for their quarter final clash against Middlesex.
Congratulations to Wiltshire Under 15s!
Wiltshire Under 15s have secured their place in the next round of the ECB Cup with a comprehensive 110 run win over Oxfordshire. Batting first Wiltshire scored 185 all out with significant contributions coming from Craig Miles (48) and Jack Dymoke (48). In reply, some excellent bowling from all of Wiltshire's bolwers ended up with Oxfordshire being bolwed out for just 75. The pick of the bowlers was Brad Dawson who returned figures of 5 for 27 in 8 overs. He was ably supported by Craig Miles, 2 for 12, James Lavis, 1 for 13 and Ben Gardner, 2 for 10. This wins continues Wiltshire's fantastic form so far this season and means that they now qualify for the next stages of the ECB Cup, having already beaten Wales and Gloucestershire.
We wish the under 15s all the best in the next round of the competition.
Record Breaking Wiltshire!
Having beaten their previous highest score in the MCCA Knockout competition on Sunday 26th April Wiltshire have proceeded to equal it in their second MCCA knockout game on Sunday 3rd May against Berkshire. Scoring 334-6, Wiltshire went on to bowl Berkshire out for 250. This continues Wiltshire's great form from the previous week when they beat Herefordshire by 120 runs.
Club Online Survey
The Wiltshire Cricket Board has been tasked by the ECB with self assessing the effectiveness with which it works across all different areas of Cricket development in order to improve the way we do things in the future.
One key area of our work revolves around Clubs. As a result the WCB has produced a short questionnaire specifically for clubs within the County to complete. It would be much appreciated if you could take 5 minutes to complete the attached questionnaire and return to pete.sykes@ecb.co.uk. By completing this form you will ensure that we have your very necessary comments and will be helping Wiltshire Cricket strive for further and future improvement.

Coaches Wanted!!
Wiltshire's Performance Programme is ever growing with ambitions in 2008/2009 for us to run increased district programmes for both Boys and Girls. There will be age groups for which we have not run programmes for before and there will be increased fixtures and coaching programmes for those that already exist. All of these initiatives will obviously result in a greater demand for coaches and managers to get involved with our winter County and District Coaching programmes.
Therefore, if you are a coach that would like to get involved with the Wiltshire Cricket Board in working on our winter coaching programme or alternatively are a volunteer who would be interested in administering and managing a district squad please get in touch with either Pete Sykes or Alan CrouchWe are looking for enthusiastic people who would be committed to working with the WCB to improve the standards and opportunities available to our young Cricketers within the county.
Wiltshire Cricket Board is affiliated to the England and Wales Cricket Board with the county club competing in the Minor Counties Championship.

Wiltshire is committed to developing and offering Cricketing opportunities to people at all levels of the game from grass roots right the way through to senior cricket across both boys, girls, ladies and men. We do not only concentrate on players but also aim to support the development of Groundsmen, umpires and scorers in order to ensure that cricket in Wiltshire is enjoyed by as many people as possible.
