Wiltshire Super 1s travel to Bristol for pairs competition
Wiltshire Cricket teamed up with the Gloucestershire and Somerset Cricket Foundation to deliver a Super 1s competition day. For Wiltshire’s participants this was their first opportunity to compete with others from neighbouring counties in a more traditional cricketing format. All participants from the 3 counties were invited to Hengrove Leisure Park to partake in a round-robin, pairs tournament on the 15th February.
The day kicked off at 10:00AM with a workshop focusing on communication, interacting with new people, and finding out more about each other to promote inclusion and ease potential anxieties. Participants really enjoyed getting the opportunity to socialise with different people in completely different counties.
Once the Communication Workshop had finished, the competition got underway. Each county fielded 1 team, with over 30 participants partaking. Each game was played in a pairs format with, participants getting an opportunity to bowl 1 over, whilst the batters played in pairs having two overs per game.
Each game presented a unique opportunity for Super 1s participants to take their personal, social and cricketing skills into a new environment by working together and learning with their peers. Attending a festival was a first for several participants which presented a very different challenge to those they are used to at their hub sessions. It was great to see individuals applying the skills they had developed through Super 1s in a more competitive environment.
The Super 1s Competition ran smoothly and provided a fantastic opportunity for all involved. This event further highlights the importance of inclusive activities that enable young people to develop their wider personal, social, and transferable skills through cricket.
After the event, participants were quickly to share their positive feedback with coaching and at their respective Super 1s Hubs in Wiltshire, highlighting how they had enjoyed meeting new people and playing matches against different participants.
