Congratulations to Alfie Johnson who has signed a two year rookie contract with Gloucestershire CCC

Wiltshire Cricket wishes to pass its congratulations to Alfie Johnson who has been awarded with a two year rookie contract following his recent time within the Gloucestershire CCC Academy.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is delighted to confirm that the 2024 and 2025 Young Academy Player Alfie Johnson has signed a two-year Rookie contract.

Currently spending the winter in Perth to gain valuable experience in Australian conditions, Alfie has already impressed with his abilities, professionalism, and rapid development.

The 18-year-old off-spinner is a hard-working and self-driven cricketer who progressed through Wiltshire’s County age-group system. Since joining the Gloucestershire Academy in 2023, he has demonstrated a consistent upward trajectory in skill, game awareness, and physical development.

The 2025 season proved a significant milestone in his career. Selected to represent the Southwest at the ECB Super 4s, Alfie finished the week as the leading wicket-taker.

Through the continued partnership between Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, he also represented Wiltshire Men’s 1st XI throughout the summer. This exposure accelerated his growth and further strengthened the relationship between the two counties.

Across two years within the Gloucestershire Cricket Pathway, Alfie has continued to refine his skills following his development in Wiltshire. He made a strong impression during the Club’s pre-season trip to Stellenbosch and subsequently earned multiple opportunities within the 1st and 2nd XIs, providing valuable senior experience that supported his progress. His journey highlights the success of the collaborative approach to identifying, nurturing, and developing regional talent.

Despite being in Australia, Alfie Johnson has sent this message to the Gloucestershire Media Team as the young spinner prepares for his future with Gloucestershire:

“I’m excited to have signed my first professional contract with Glos. It’s an honour."

“I am very grateful to all the coaches and other staff who’ve supported me brilliantly during two very enjoyable years on the Academy. I’ve also had a lot of support and opportunity in the Wiltshire pathway and at Corsham CC."

“I’m determined to work hard, learn from the coaches and my teammates here at Glos and contribute to the club’s success.”

Laura Charles-Price, Head of Talent Pathways at Gloucestershire CCC gave this comment:

“Alfie is a great cricketer and an even greater human. He has shown huge commitment, always first to training and games for his prep, and we’re delighted to see all of his hard work pay off and be rewarded."

"We’re looking forward to having Alfie back next spring. This is also a fantastic demonstration of the strength of partnership between Gloucestershire CCC and Wiltshire: cross-county talent ID and providing the best development opportunities for players.”

Tom Morton, Head of Boys Pathway, Wiltshire Cricket told Gloucestershire:

“We’re absolutely delighted to see Alfie Johnson sign his first professional contract with Gloucestershire. Alfie began his cricketing journey in Wiltshire with Corsham CC, progressing through our pathway programmes and into the Emerging Player Programme before joining the Gloucestershire Academy. "

"He also represented Wiltshire 1st XI, where he continued to impress with his attitude and performances. Alfie has always demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and a genuine passion for the game."

"Everyone at Wiltshire Cricket is incredibly proud of his progress, and we look forward to watching his continued development as he takes this exciting next step into the professional game.”
