Women's and Girls' Club Development Update

At our inaugural Affiliated Club recreational game call we provided an update on the available Club Development support opportunities for clubs looking to start, consolidate or grow their Women's and/or Girls' sections. Here is a summary of that update ...

Women's and Girls' Club Development

Wiltshire Cricket looks to provide Women's and Girls' Club Development support for all clubs across the county. These meetings can cover a range of support that a club may need (for example, starting a girl’s section/developing from Softball to Hardball cricket etc.)

Club Development Support Plan:

  • Email – W&G CDO will send out support offers to clubs or Clubs may contact the W&G CDO to arrange a meeting.
  • Meeting – Preferably face to face meetings are arranged and are ‘club led’ meetings – this allows clubs to highlight key areas they need support in.
  • Ongoing Support – The county W&G CDO will follow up with an email summary of what was discussed in the meeting and send follow ups across the year for a ‘club check in’

Season Summary – 2025@

This season has seen significant progress both on and off the field.

Key highlights include:

  • Strong performances in both short and longer formats, with some standout individual and team displays.
  • Several players making important contributions with bat and ball, and a growing depth in our squad.
  • Continued growth in the squad, with 6 players ‘signed up’ in 2024 to 32 players in 2025
  • A noticeable improvement in training opportunities with 3 clubs hosting our seniors training sessions across the season.

Fixtures/Training in 2025:

  • X3 Training sessions (Hosted at Calne, Melksham, Chippenham)
  • X3 Fixture played (x2 Home fixtures hosted at Melksham and Avebury, x1 Away fixture)
  • X1 Away Fixture Away cancelled (rain)

Looking Ahead to 2026

As we look towards next season, there’s plenty to be excited about:

  • Winter Training: We’ll be looking to run some indoor winter training nets to keep the cricket happening across the off-season. Dates and venues will be shared soon.
  • Wiltshire Cricket Seniors: Wiltshire Women’s Seniors will now come under the one Wiltshire Seniors umbrella. With this in mind we have two women joining onto the Seniors committee, this will provide female representation on the committee to pass on any updates as well as support of growth of the section.
  • Fixtures & Format: I am currently working with nearby counties with an aim to great a league format next year, this will mean fixture dates published earlier, Home and Away fixtures and more sustainability with Women’s Seniors team across counties nearby.

The World Cup is coming to England, this exciting opportunity lets us as county boards promote across the county. Our main promotion areas are:

  • W&G SB Tournament
    • Hosted before the World Cup begins; we will be running a softball tournament-style festival day with each team being given a different country to represent.
  • School promotion
    • Using multiple members of the team, we are aiming to reach 30+ schools between Monday 20th April - Friday 24th April 2026
  • Wiltshire Cricket TAKE OVER

Women’s Playing Opportunities

The Wiltshire Cricket Women and Girls’ Leagues create an opportunity for female cricketers to participate and compete in both Hardball and Softball versions of cricket. The range of competitions aim to incorporate players with a range of experience. With such a range of experiences, the mix of competitions evolve as the season progresses, ensuring maximum enjoyment, participation, challenge, and success for every player/team.

  • West of England Premier League
    • Launched in 2023, a new 40-over league, featuring the use of pink balls and coloured clothing, was established as a direct result of the tremendous growth in the number of girls and women playing cricket across the region.
    • Nine clubs in Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire have combined to form the West of England Women’s Premier Cricket League
  • 35-Over League
    • The 2025 season brought an exciting opportunity for Wiltshire and Somerset to merge the 35-Over leagues together. Alongside the Gloucestershire 35-Over league both leagues will align to match with rules/points/league structure.
  • T20 League
    • The Women’s T20 Hardball League was amended in 2024 to change from a Limitless Wicket T20 Legue ran in the 2023 season. The league is now aligned to standard ECB T20 Rules.
  • Hardball Pairs Leagues
    • The Hardball Pairs league is one of the most popular Women’s leagues entered by teams in the 2025.
    • As the number of Women's teams moving into Hardball cricket increases, adding in the Hardball Pairs League creates the gateway for newer players to give hardball cricket a go.
  • Softball/Hardball 100-Ball Cup
    • To align with the exciting HUNDRED competition introduced by the ECB in 2020, these Cup fixtures are open to both Softball and Hardball teams, and the competition directly aligns to the ECB regulations (out is out) for the 100-Ball Cup.
  • Softball Pairs League – Social
    • The Social softball pairs league is aimed for our newer teams who are looking to progress from Softball Festivals into a Softball League
  • Softball Pairs League – Competitive
    • The Competitive softball pairs league is the same format as the social league aimed at teams who are more experience in our Softball Leagues.
  • Softball Festivals
    • Most likely our most popular Women’s playing opportunity, Softball festivals are club-run festivals creating a fun and friendly environment for all levels of players to participate in.
  • Indoor League – Social/Competitive
    • Hosted January to March in the new year our indoor league is now split into a social and competitive league, similar to the Softball Pairs League.  We are hosting the league at Calne Leisure Centre for 2026.
